What should be our priorities for 2008 and beyond?
Clearly two things stand out right away: 1)a comprehensive foreign policy for America in the 21st century; and 2) reform of our entitlements to once more define how to share common burdens while curing the deepening unfairness among the generations and socio-economic classes.
Having said that, it seems also clear that both priorities depend, hinge on but one important policy.
We have consistently failed to address this policy in any sensible fashion for more than a century - right from the beginning of the age of the automobile.
So long as this country lacks an energy policy that frees us from dependence on foreign resources, including natural gas as well as oil, we cannot pursue successful geopolitical goals very different from the disastrous goals and policies in the world we now pursue.
